Freeing You From Past Trauma So You Can Learn to Swim
Using a combination of innovative techniques based on over 40 years of swim instruction experience, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT, also called tapping), and a strong intuitive connection with people, I help would-be swimmers move beyond the fear, break the hold of past traumas, and rewrite your future where you can learn not only to swim but to experience the joy of swimming.
Maybe you’ve tried to swim in the past, but couldn’t get past your fears. Maybe something happened to you and it blocks you from getting in the water. I created Swim with Courage because I’ve unlocked a powerful combination of techniques that help my clients move past the fear, break the hold of past trauma, and discover the joy and fun of swimming. And you can, too!
When you are ready to Swim with Courage, I will be right by your side. I will be in awe of your courage, and I’ll be brave with you!
A typical session takes 1.5-2 hours at a local outdoor pool. Melinda meets with you and talks with you on land. She's beside you every step of the way. When you both are ready for the next step, your session will move to the water. The goal is for you to become comfortable in the water, putting your face in the water, blowing bubbles, and doing basic strokes so that you will be ready for beginner swim lessons at the location of your choice.
Melinda's unique Swim with Courage program is adaptable and customized to your needs. When fear or past traumas emerge, the typical response is to panic, stop breathing, physically freeze and/ or mentally blank out. Melinda is beside you on land and in the water whenever the fear surfaces. Using her EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique or "tapping") training during your session to interrupt the cycle of fear, you can calmly move past it and free yourself to learn.
I will not coerce a student to do something they do not want to do.
I will not physically leave them in the pool or swim away from them to answer a phone or speak to someone else.
I will never touch the student without permission.
I will never block or constrain a student’s movement, force or hold a student under the water, or use trickery to get a student to do something, for instance, I will not say, “swim to me,” and then back away from them while they are swimming to me.
I will never raise my voice or demean a student in any way.
I will encourage students to try new things.
I will stay with the student for the entire lesson. I am in the water to be brave with them.
I will stand close and make eye contact with the student as we explore the water, the student’s reactions to being in the water, the learning of the swimming techniques, and completing EFT sets as we proceed.
I will be patient, attentive, and supportive during the entire session. I will always be honest and act in ways that make me worthy of the student’s trust.
I will remain in awe of the courage it takes for students to face their water trauma and appreciative that they are trusting me to accompany them on this journey.
